Novogratz Brittany Sofa: The BEST Sofa Under $500?

Is the Novogratz Brittany Sofa Cheap and Awesome?
Six months ago, I decided to purchase the Novogratz Brittany sofa in camel faux leather. Let’s talk about why, and how I feel about my decision months later.
It took me several weeks of research to finally decide to purchase the Novogratz Brittany Sofa. The reasons for my hesitation were the somewhat mixed reviews pertaining to the comfort of the sofa, as well as the general risk of purchasing something so large and important sight unseen online.
We all know what a hassle it would be to have to return such a large item. When you’re purchasing something online it’s normal to be concerned about the product matching the photo. It’s normal to ask: Will I get what I’m expecting?
However, upon inspecting some of the photos other customers had posted online along with reviews, I felt more confident about making this purchase. In the end, when I took the plunge, I felt and believed I had found a sofa that looked much higher end than it actually was … and inexpensively.
Truth be told, I did not want to go into debt for a piece of furniture. And, so, after looking into the sofa for awhile, I was very happy to pay the $400 and take the risk.
One of the reasons I opted to purchase something new, was to enjoy the convenience of delivery that would have been logistically difficult and expensive to coordinate with a second-hand sofa in my area.
And the Novogratz Brittany WAS delivered straight into my living room in an easy-to-unpack box. As a single mom, it doesn’t get better than that.
What Did I Pay for the Novogratz Brittany?
At the time of my purchase, the Novogratz Brittany sofa cost me a mere $370 plus tax. As I write this today, it’s still only $379 on Amazon (although we know those prices can fluctuate from day to day). However, at $400 including tax, that is a STEAL.
And, while I would LOVE for this sofa to last for years – at the cost of $400, if it doesn’t, am I going to lose sleep, and cry about that piece of furniture? No. Why, no, I’m not.
I’m going to be perhaps a little remorseful if it doesn’t make it beyond the two-year mark. But at six months, it still looks BRAND NEW in our living room.
The sofa arrived undamaged, and required minimal assembly. In particular, I had to unpack the box, unfold the sofa, and screw in the arms and the legs. All in all, I estimate it took me about 30 minutes, and I did it alone. It will go even more quickly for you if you have better tools than what Novogratz provides in the box.
When the sofa was assembled I was VERY pleased with what I saw. In my opinion, what is shown by Novogratz in their sales photos DOES authentically match what I received.
Now, I cannot vouch for every single color this sofa is available in. As I am recording this video, the Brittany is available in ELEVEN different colors including black and camel faux leather, and linen fabrics in navy blue, light blue, green, dark gray, light gray, mustard, orange, pink, and white. The linen sofas are usually (though not always) even LESS expensive than the faux leather.
If you are interested in purchasing the Brittany, I highly recommend searching for the specific color you are interested in, in photos other customers have posted online.
How is the Camel Faux Leather?
In the case of the camel faux leather, the vegan leather is supple. It feels soft and comfortable to the touch. The couch itself looks like something you might find in a modern European furniture shop, and pay thousands of dollars to purchase.
One of the concerns raised in reviews about the faux leather, is that it scratches easily. While I have NOT had any issues with scratching on our sofa, we also do not have any animals with claws in our home. This may be something to consider if you are thinking about purchasing this sofa.
Is the Novogratz Brittany Sofa Comfortable?
So, let’s talk about COMFORT. The couch is definitely NOT as comfortable as an American style potato couch (that’s the technical term). It’s just not.
It’s not a couch to sink into, that will form around your body, and envelop you, and cocoon you, and fluff you like a marshmallow. None of that. Nope. If you need THAT in a couch, this one is NOT for you – it’s not for you.
However, the seat of the couch is pretty deep at 34.5 inches. Interestingly, the BACK of the sofa has more cushion than the seat. The back is actually pretty darn comfortable. I can’t help but wish the seat had the same level of cushion that the back does.
My nine-year-old daughter, Sophia, and I DO enjoy some very cozy movie nights on this sofa. The back folds down very easily. We add a few cozy pillows, a blanket, and are good to go.
Sleeping on the Novogratz Brittany?
I HAVE attempted sleeping on this futon. Not gonna lie – it wasn’t comfortable. It just wasn’t. However, don’t give up! There are workarounds if you love this couch and its price point.
What I ended up doing, was purchasing a foam mattress pad to lay upon the futon portion. That SIGNIFICANTLY increases the comfort of the futon. I highly recommend doing this if you intend on using this for sleep in any way, shape, or form.
Is the Novogratz Brittany STABLE?
The Brittany sofa HAS been stable for us. I haven’t had any concerns about its structure. It doesn’t wobble or creak, and nothing has come loose. Nothing has happened that might make me question the structural Integrity of the piece.
I do get nervous – not gonna lie – when we have little kids over, and they are climbing over it like a jungle gym. I have questions about how this will hold up long term. However, we have kids over multiple times a week who love to sit on the arm rest or climb over the couch and, so far, the sofa has held up beautifully. I’m actually quite shocked about that.
The sofa is also lightweight, and easy to push around if you like redecorating like I do.
Do I Recommend the Novogratz Brittany Sofa?
Well, it depends. I do not regret my purchase. I’m very pleased with it, actually. But I don’t think the Brittany is for everyone.
- The sofa is aesthetically pleasing. Visitors to our home compliment the sofa regularly, and that is really, really nice.
- I am reasonably happy with the comfort and stability of this piece.
- The Brittany is perfect for a conversational area, for sipping wine, and visiting with friends.
- The Brittany is perfect for hosting a guest for a night or two, IF you are willing to go the extra mile and provide a foam mattress topper on top of the futon.
- This piece is ideal for someone who cares how their home looks, and doesn’t want to spend an arm and a leg on a furniture piece.
- If you want that cushy, potato couch feel.
- If you have kids who want to use the couch as a jungle gym.
- You’re looking for an heirloom piece that will last a very long time.
- Animals with sharp claws may scratch your faux leather.
- You have the budget and appreciation for something truly high end.
Perhaps with this couch, more than with others, you’re going to have to carefully consider your lifestyle and your priorities. I think this piece has a lot to offer, but if it’s not offering exactly what you’re looking for, it will be the wrong piece. So, consider what’s important to you when deciding whether or not to purchase the Brittany.
